Palaia is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Pisa in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 45 km southwest of Florence and about 30 km southeast of Pisa. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 4,552 and an area of 73.5 kmē.
The Comune of Palaia, at thirty minutes from Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra and the coast, situated in an area of great natural beauty steeped in history and tradition which are still cherished, is one of the most interesting areas of the Province of Pisa and the entire region.
Numerous works of art and architectural treasures such as the Romanesque parish church of San Martino, the charming villages of Montefoscoli, San Gervasio and the historical centre of Forcoli, Villa Saletta and Toiano are well worth a visit.
Traditionally a rural area, the land still produces Chianti D.O.C. in the Pisan hills, an excellent quality olive oil, tobacco, sunflowers and wheat. The farmhouses and restaurants offer a typically Tuscan friendly hospitality.
