Volterra

The sensation that one feels when approaching Volterra is that of a pleasant return to the past, the preserved land, the vast horizons, the pure nature, the incredible architecture of antique homes.

The Volterrans love opera and music. In the studios of long ago, artists sculpted their prestigious alabaster pieces to the sound of music. Opera is often played in Volterra at the Persio Flacco theatre. Thanks to the Primavera Volterrana Association, numerous musical events are organized during the warm seasons in the gardens and plazas.

Volterra

A great theatrical programme is offered throughout the winter. During the summer, in the month of July the Volterra Teatro opens and has for 20 years transformed the city into a splendid stage under the stars for all types of artists who want to participate. One particular success has been the representation of the Compagnia della Fortezza, a theatre workshop directed by Armando Punzo from the Colonia Penale di Volterra.

In August, a medieval memorial takes place organized by the Tourist Consortium. In this occasion, the streets of the city are filled with sounds of antique medieval instruments and that of the tamburo which accompanies the Volterran flag flying ceremony. The Medieval week concludes with Astiludio, a tournament of flag flyer groups from various communities all around Italy.

Traditional cuisine is well represented by the numerous restaurants in the city where delicious dishes are accompanied with excellent wines produced in the area.
